Where the Thread Turned Inward presents a contemplative body of tapestries by master weaver Wilna Simpelaar. Rooted in the ancient Gobelin weaving tradition, the exhibition reflects an inward journey, where presence, memory, and emotion are woven slowly into form.

Simpelaar’s works unfold as woven paintings, shaped by silence, stillness, and attentive care. Created through a labor-intensive process in which the image emerges in reverse, each tapestry carries the rhythm of time, meditation, and disciplined craft. Wool, silk, and cotton are treated not only as materials but as carriers of emotional and spiritual resonance.

Deeply influenced by her long engagement with India, Simpelaar’s visual language draws from Indian skies, shifting light, kite festivals, and the sensorial intensity of place. These impressions merge seamlessly with European weaving traditions, resulting in works that exist between inner and outer worlds, between atmosphere and emotion.

Installed within the Black Box at Kanoria Centre for Arts, the exhibition encourages slow looking and quiet reflection. The tapestries invite viewers into a space of pause, where subtle shifts of colour, texture, and form reveal themselves over time.

Where the Thread Turned Inward is both an artistic and meditative practice an exploration of how craft, when pursued with devotion and patience, becomes a form of presence.
