Traditional and Contemporary Textiles from India
The textiles on display come from the Northwest of India, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Kutch. The people who made them are mostly desert-dwelling nomadic tribal communities. Many of them are "out-caste", and forbidden by the Brahmin elite from entering the temples. So they make their own portable shrines, like the pachedi (1) on display here.

Their individual, tribal and community identity was marked by styles of dress, colour and decoration, by different uses of embroidery, patchwork and appliquee. These variations occur in personal clothing, bags, tent covers, bullock covers, mattress covers ans so on.and appliquee.
